Day 16, Saturday, July 20th

Today we rode over to Sydney then headed a bit south to the Fortress of Louisbourg, an 18th century French fort.  Along the way we got another shot of the lighthouse.

In the town of Louisbourg.

Here we are at the fortress.  All the employees were dressed in period costumes and spoke to us of life and happenings in the 1740s when the fortress was in its heyday.  This is the largest reconstruction in North America.  Williamsburg is physically bigger but many of the buildings were brought in from other locations and this is all authentic.  Very impressive. . .and quite large.

After two sieges the British finally prevailed and the French by that time were relinquishing their claims in North America and the fortress declined.

There is a lighthouse in Louisbourg quite naturally.  It is the oldest in Canada and the second oldest in North America.  Only the lighthouse at Cape Cod, MA, is older.

Alexander Graham Bell and his wife enjoying the view from the waterfront. . .as are we!
